The Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation is dedicated to increasing awareness of fisheries topics, educating others about our research, and training the next generation of fisheries scientists through outreach and education initiatives. We are proud to offer a free workshop that empowers students to learn about the science behind fisheries, explore potential career paths, and hear more about what it’s actually like to work in the field.

Details

As Rhode Island continues to grow its Blue Economy, we’re excited to help students see how fisheries, marine science, and research may align with their values as they explore potential career paths.

Workshops take place in your classroom/school, and we bring all necessary supplies.

Workshops last one class period (approximately 45 minutes to one hour), and introduce students to:

  • Fisheries Science + Why it Matters

  • Fisheries Science Careers + Potential Paths

  • What it’s Like to Work in Fisheries Science

We also provide students with resources for additional career exploration following the workshop.

Eligibility

  • This free workshop is available for high school juniors and seniors, as well as college freshmen, who do not have in-depth prior knowledge of fisheries and are currently considering potential career paths.

  • We are happy to provide workshops at schools, universities, and other organizations that support these students.

  • We can provide workshops in Southern New England.

  • As this workshop is free, we have a limited number of workshops we can provide each year. Thanks to support from Rhode Island Sea Grant, we have expanded access for Rhode Island students in the 2026-2027 school year.
