Southern New England Collaborative Research Initative

A Project of the Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation

Purpose of Research Program: The purpose of the Southern New England Collaborative Research Initiative (SNECRI) is to provide support to teams of scientists, managers, and members of the commercial fishing industry to work together collaboratively on fisheries research projects.  The focus of the initiative is on providing accurate, timely, and credible data to better inform management decisions, and on developing solutions to common management problems in commercial fisheries important to southern New England.  The research program is designed to support 1-2 year research projects, and addresses a range of topics including gear engineering aimed at bycatch reduction and compliance with protected species regulations; reproductive capabilities and discard mortality rates for key species; and evaluation of the socio-economic impacts of fishery management regulations.

Strategic Plan for Collaborative Fisheries Research in Southern New England

Grant Number: NA09NMF4720414

Amount of Federal Funding: $3,501,0665.00

Scope of Work:

Under the “Strategic Plan for Collaborative Fisheries Research in Southern New England” the Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation will administer a research program over the course of the next four years aimed at 1) gathering and assessing information supportive of sound fishery management decisions, and 2) developing an ongoing collaborative and cooperative approach to fisheries research projects among scientists, managers, and members of the commercial fishing industry. In doing so, the research projects it seeks to support will be aimed at providing information for achieving both the sustainability of the fishery resources important to southern New England and the sustainability of the livelihoods and economic well-being of the harvesters and coastal communities that depend on those resources. The strategic plan will extend and expand the existing Southern New England Collaborative Research Initiative (SNECRI).
